Today some crazy elderly man walked up to me while I was in the Walmart parking lot, indulging myself in the irresistible nicotine of a cigarette and asks me, "I wish these people could drive, don't you?" As I always do with potentially insane people, I agreed. "Yes sir, I do, too." He walked away from me for a moment before returning. He asked if I'd help him lug a heavy battery into a cart because he had just had back surgery and couldn't pick it up. Of course, I obliged, and took a moment out of my busy life to help someone. As always, I felt good after helping a fellow person, and it gets me to thinking.
Why are there so many selfish people in the world today? How hard is it to take a moment out of your day to assist someone and make their day a little better with a small act of kindness? I ask you, the readers, to take a different look at things. The next time a stranger tries to start a conversation with them, be polite and talk to them. If you see someone drop something, pick it up for them. Even hold a door for someone. Every time I'm walking through a doorway and see someone coming I'll hold the door for them and wish them a good day. Maybe I brightened someone's day enough for them to extend the act and make someone else a bit happier. You never know if your one small act of kindness can ripple out and end up affecting many people. So why not? There's a morsel of food for thought.
