I just thought this might be of some interest to people looking for a way to honor Dime's memory:
Ride For Dime (an annual Biker Fundraiser that raises money for a charity in the name of Dime all accross the US) was mentioned on the news in Texas this morning:
Ride For Dime officials were on hand to pass out new guitars to kids in the newly formed Darrell Abbott Chapter of Little Kids Rock in Dallas, Texas. We are extremely proud to be a part of this. You can read more at:
Texans With Character: Ride For Dime
Reporting
Teresa Frosini FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) —
"Ride For Dime" is an annual charity event held in memory of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, the founder of metal band Pantera.
Abbott was born and raised in Dallas and lived in Arlington at the time of his death in 2004 when a gunman stormed a Columbus, Ohio nightclub stage and killed the former Pantera guitarist and three others.
Dan McNew, David Manley and Rob Eichelberger formed the charity remembrance ride and concert in hopes of continuing the famed guitarist's desire to give to others.
After raising $10,000, the trio went to Abbott's longtime partner to see how the money could be used to keep his legacy alive.
"Darrell was always about wanting to further the musical career or the musical aspirations of children," said Eichelberger.
Abbott, 38, and his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, 40, formed Damageplan after the breakup of Pantera -- a group they formed in the 1980s. Their father is Jerry Abbott, a country songwriter and producer.
Little Kids Rock, an organization that wants to place guitars in the hands of as many school-aged kids as possible, has many big-name music supporters, including the Abbotts.
"You guys are the future of music," Eichelberger recently told a group.
"It will help your grades … it will help your attitude. It will help everything about you because music is something you have to do a lot of work to get good at and anytime you do something you have to put a lot of work into makes you better in everything else you do."
Music teacher Daniel Tippol learned that lesson first hand.
"When I was a kid, I was not a very good student," the Pleasant Grove Elementary School teacher admitted. "I was a little rebellious and my dad said, 'here's a guitar see what you can do with it' and I learned to play guitar and here I am now. I went to college, I did everything I needed to do."
Just this week, Little Kids Rock used $60,000 in donations to give 200 guitars to music programs at several Dallas schools.
"You are able to play the music as if you actually wrote it and it feels good, too," student Nathaniel Breckenridge said.
"The coolest thing about it now is," Eichelberger said, "Darrell is going to be influencing a whole new generation of guitar players and he's not even alive anymore."
“From the very first Ride For Dime in 2005. The ride stopped for dinner at Campo Verde and then again for water. Only 2 of us completed the entire route. In 2005 we did not have an official concert but there was a great pre-ride party the night before at Monte Carlos.”

I actually haven't been able to participate in any of the events yet but this summer I am going to the after-ride concert portion of the Philly Chapter (I live in New Jersey) and I am sooo excited! One of my favorite bands (Saint Caine - google em their awesome!) is going to be performing and they are friends of Vinnie so feel that much closer to this cause. I'm not sure of the actual date yet but when ever it is I will be sure to update the information here and post any memorial picts that i get!
YES Come on come all it is August 9th and 10th reportedly this year in Big D. (Dallas)
You don't have to ride or even own a bike just come hear some excellent tunes and drink a whiskey or 653. The greatest people in the world are there - the "Damage Clan"
If you can't make Dallas, Philly has the only other officially sanctioned Ride the week before in Philly August 2, 2008.
All funds go to Little Kids Rock Charity.
Went and saw OPETH last night, likely the most musically talented band there is currently touring with Dream Theatre it was absolutely incredible.
But before "Baying of the Hounds" Michael says "Bow your heads for Darrell" so I guess the song is about Dime, I never knew that. It was epic.
Long live Dime!!!
