I'd say either thrash or sludge metal, and from the two genre's either meshuggah or crowbar. mors principium est has my attention in melodic death, and carcass are permenent gods of gore, but really. thrash and sludge are the shit.

Why does everything have to fit into a nice, neat, pretty box? Metal kicks ass and I love all your little genres and sub-genres. Just because one group gets a unique sound and people start ripping them off we gotta have a new genre for them. Fuck that! Metal lives forever, play your heart out and fuck whatever genre they place you in. I love when bands are unique. I love Jimi Hendrix to Black Sabbath to King Diamond to Metallica to Cradle of Filth to SlipKnot to Tool to Strapping Young Lad to Norma Jean to Killswitch Engage to Testament to Judas Priest to Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Janis Joplin to the Doors to the Beatles to Black Label to Sepultura to Pantera. They all have powerful inspiring riffs, kickass bass, and unique sound. Do they all fit in your fucking box?

they don't have to. however, a discussion like this rox, for those of us that don't get their panties in a twist like you do. generalizing is a way of finding other shit more like what you're listening to so you can que up a good fuckin playlist. i listen to tristania, tiamat and darkwell, but there's some days i need a quick list of shit that follows a black trend or a more thrash sound. i'm fucking glad there's sub-divivisons about then.
it's imperfect as hell do generallize, but it sure as hell helps, once you've taken the time to figure out what each sub-category meant to you, or come up with your own.

I will agree generalizing is human nature. We do like to put everything into a box and give it a name. The problem with Genres and Sub-Genres in Metal is that it leads to a more divided way of thinking. There are over 20 different genres in Metal. Often times with our youth instead of it being identified as a way of categorizing our huge library of Metal, they see it as their identity, who they are. This leads them to believe if they like Gothic Metal (Tristania), then they cannot allow themselves to like Doom Metal (CandleMass). Which Gothic Metal is just a form of Doom Metal. If they were avid Black Metal fans they would not be able to go to their friends and say they like Industrial Metal. They would be asked if their pussies hurt?
My non-existent panties are not in a twist, only slightly crinkled. My huge library of Metal is broken down into Heavy Metal, Heavier Metal, and Heavier than Heavier Metal. It's all Metal to me and that is what I love!!!
